Girl Power ~ AA, AG, BB, NB

People don't realize how important girls are in this world. Girls in our community are very important and we think that everyone should know. We have interviewed some important women that shared their opinions about girl power as well as how they each became awesome women. In our community we have a lot of powerful women that are admired… you may recognize some of them.

What Does Girl Power mean to YOU?  Mrs. Elizabeth Kmetz Associate Director of Housing & Revitalization Department said this about girl power, “Knowing yourself and your strengths and not being apologetic for it. Not letting people tell you how to be and other girls should support that.” Another person we interviewed was Mrs Kim Vigneron Principal of Beverly Elementary school. Mrs. Kim Vigneron says,“ You have to be confident on who you are and always believe in yourself and stretch yourself. I think girl power is representing to everyone their strengths, and also not being afraid to ask people to help you with that. I have two sons, so I try to is show them that I can do other than stereotypical girl things. Like mowing the grass and sharing the chores around the house. My husband and I share the responsibilities together as a family.”

Mrs. Kmetz best represents girl power because she is unapologetic-ally girly. She believes girls have a lot of empathy. Mrs.Vigneron says, “I had two brothers growing up and I thought that I could do anything that they could do, so I thought that anybody could do anything whether they are a boy or a girl.” There are all kinds of different girls in are community, and in our world, and they all represent girl power in so many different ways. Everyone has a different meaning on girl power.

What do you think we can do to have more Girl Power in Detroit/Metro Detroit and the world?
Mrs. Kmetz would love to see more girl power. She also believes men and boys need to step up and that women and girls shouldn’t feel they have all the household chores. Mrs. Kmetz feels that women and girls have a lot of great things to say, and people should listen to them more.

Mrs. Vigneron felt that looking for different ways to help the community is one way of being involved. For example, there are the stem programs if you are interested in science or math.  Mrs. Vigneron also believes that carrying yourself with pride and feeling confident in yourself shows girl power. She thinks working on those skills while being articulate, kind and respectful is how to best represent girls.  This question is important to us because we would like more girl power in the world.

Hopefully you take these powerful women’s advice and show your true Girl Power around the community and inside you. Just remember that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. And to never be afraid to be yourself.
