Brendan Quinn ~CQ

Brendan Quinn just graduated College of Creative Studies (CCS) college a couple of months ago. He also did a project where he got to design a possible product for the community. Brendan decided to design a emergency helper. It is supposed to help people who got hurt and have a friend nearby. The box has multiple different first aid kits for the person to grab out of the side of the box and help the person in need. Brendan is an important member of the community.

Brendan's favorite project at CCS was the garden hub project where he went out into the communities of Detroit and interviewed urban farmers to find out if there was something that could be designed for them that could improve the task of urban farming. It was a group project, he worked with other designers to research, collaborate, and make a website for the unique needs of urban farmers.

Brendan received his masters degree in interaction design at CCS. He created a painted stroke project that paints the faces of the people who helped create it. He wants to get a job designing technology experiences or fun interactions for people. He likes dark chocolate, fresh strawberries, sailboats, and windy days. For fun he likes to do all sorts of crafts. Whether it's woodworking or glass blowing, he enjoys making things.

Brendan Quinn is only one of the many interesting people in our community and only one of the many students of CCS. For all of his hard work, Brendan Quinn deserves one million dollars.  When asked what he would do with one million dollars he said, "If I had 1,000,000 dollars I would go on a trip around the world."

Mr. Froling deserves a million dollars for all of his hard work.  When asked what he would do with one million dollars, Mr. Froling responded with, “I would take my family to Rome and pay for my kid's college”Mr. Froling is now a veteran and important to our community.

Have you heard of a exterminator? You probably have. By chance you may have had one do their job in your house. Brian Leggett is an exterminator. He gets rid of rats, mice, cockroaches, ect. In this article we’re going to tell you why he and other exterminators are helpful to our community.

You may want to know exactly what exterminators do.  Exterminators use chemicals and traps to exterminate pests such as mice, rats, wasps, hornets, mosquitoes, insects, and spiders too. Exterminators also do more than exterminate. They also clean grease traps from restaurants. A grease trap is where the excess grease is disposed from deep fryers.

Exterminators help our community in many ways. They can keep us healthy by killing bugs, rodents and by cleaning grease traps. Now you know why exterminators are helpful to our community.  We are lucky to have Mr. Leggett hard at work in our community as an exterminator.

Ann Gardella works for Accenture, a company that does consulting working on large mergers and acquisitions. She is really hard working. She has four kids that she also has to take care of, and that makes her ten times more hard working. She also works every day of the week and she has four kids that all do sports and activities.

Ann Gardella started working for Accenture in 2001.  She gives an example for her job of mergers and acquisitions by saying, "Let's say, McDonald's and Burger King wanted to join forces and combine their restaurants. I would be able to help." She says she went into this profession because "my mom told me I had to." Ann Gardella is very busy with her job, but she says the best part is "probably the people and the hardest part is me having to fire people."

In conclusion, Ann Gardella is really hard working and her job is really cool. You should check her job out maybe even look up were she works. There is an Accenture in Detroit, Michigan and one in Livonia.  She helps our community by helping people with their companies.

Jennifer Roma ~ LR & HM

My mom is jennifer Roma. She is a architect and a stroke survivor.  I am very proud of my mom and I want to be an architect one day just like her. My mom had five children including me (Lily), Izabella, Maria, Alesandro, and the youngest Leonardo. My mom is a very strong woman and I look up to her every day. I think she has helped our community by teaching people about strokes and helping to remodel Beverly School.

Jennifer Roma went through a stroke about 5 or 6 years ago.  It happened in the Groves parking lot when she was dropping off her daughter, Maria at school.  Maria was saying goodbye, and Jennifer didn’t respond.  Jennifer thought she said, “Bye, I'm going to have a nap when I get home.” but she actually didn't say anything at all. Maria tried again and again to make her respond, but she didn’t answer.  Maria called her dad for help, and he called an ambulance. Jennifer went to the hospital for about two weeks. After a week in the hospital her family was allowed to visit her.  Jennifer remembers, “My husband said to be strong and it will be ok." When Jennifer went home she had a big binder of things to do to help her remember words.  Now she is much better but she still jumbles up words every now and then.

If you didn’t know, Jennifer was an architect before she had her third child. She did many things as an architect, but one important thing she did was designing our house “it is my dream house," said Jennifer.  She also helped to remodel Beverly by designing the preschool doors. You might wonder how she did that? Well it was simple.  There were people who made a blueprint, then her and a team of people approved the best design, the third attempt.

Now you know about Jennifer Roma.  Jennifer is an inspiration and reminds us of the importance of how to identify a stroke in case of an emergency.  To learn more go to this site. As you may know she is a mother, stroke survivor and an architect. She is a very strong woman and a role model to many.

How Kevin O’Rourke Helps our Community ~LO & GS

Police officers help us so much that we might not even realize it! Police officers help the community everyday. They help people when they need it. They save people's lives, and they catch people speeding, stealing and doing bad stuff so they don’t hurt others in the future. Police always come to the rescue when you need it! Kevin O’Rourke is one of those people.

Sergeant O’Rourke has been a police officer for over a decade.  He served in the navy for four years. He has gone through some changes like being a detective and going to different schools like the Police Academy. With one million dollars he would retire, buy a big black truck and buy a new house.  He would also donate to charities.

Police officers don’t only keep everyone safe, but they also help people. They are very important to the community. They save people’s lives everyday. Kevin O’Rourke is a detective so he also helps solve mysteries. Police officers give people tickets so innocent people don't get hurt when crossing the road. When you're in trouble they are the first people to respond. Police help a lot everywhere inside and outside the community.

Police officers also help by saving wildlife, working at your school crosswalks, and helping solve investigations. Sometimes they take criminals to court who later go to jail so the community is safe. Police not only help during the day, they even help at night when there is a crime. Police officers help a lot in our community.

As you can see police officers help a lot everywhere. We really don't realize how much they mean to our community. Kevin O’Rourke is just one of the millions of police officers that can make so much of a difference in our world. You should always follow the laws and make sure to respect all the officers you meet. And maybe even say thank you.

Legal Trouble? ~JB

Having legal trouble and need a lawyer? Then Scott Beach is your guy! Scott was born and raised in Michigan, and he still resides there today. He also offers free legal service to veterans who were hurt during active military service. Scott specializes in divorce law too.

It’s a good thing Scott is a lawyer, because he has some experience with trouble! Scott was a huge troublemaker. In fact, that is what motivated Scott as a kid. He saw what happened when you got in trouble too much, which led him to the legal system. “The law has always fascinated me.” says Scott.

But being a lawyer is not all Scott does. He also enjoys running, biking and racing. “Even though swimming is part of what I do, that does not mean I enjoy it.” Scott remarks. He also wants to give other people better opportunities because he says that if he had a million dollars, “I would donate 50 grand to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.”

As you can see, Scott has many hobbies. And although this article has barely scratched the surface of who Scott Beach is, I feel it has covered his most important qualities. Overall, Scott is an amazing person. He is a true inspiration to me and I hope he inspires you too. Here is the link to his website: hppts://www.avvo.com/attorneys/48836-mi-scott-beach-730171.html

Ella Limbaugh-Scripps National Spelling Bee Contestant ~ ML

Ella Limbaugh is a thirteen-year old 8th grader, who goes to Berkshire Middle School, and is also a Scripps National Spelling Bee contestant, a role model, and an important part of our community. She has a loving family, which is built up from a Mom, a dad, and a little sister, who is in 5th grade, and will be arriving at Berkshire in September. Ella’s family is very supportive, and always encourages her to do her best, even if she doesn’t win. She loves living in Beverly Hills. She won the spelling bee for Berkshire, and was sent the Oakland Schools Spelling Bee. She won that over all, and was sent to the Nationals. Ella Limbaugh grew up in a house full of books to read. She studies very hard, and we are all proud of her.

My sister, Eleanor Limbaugh, is an important character in our community. She was a Scripps National Spelling Bee contestant, and she did really well until the end. She did not make it to the finals of the nationals, but she made it all the way through otherwise. She left for the competition on Sunday, May 26. She came back Thursday, May 30. If she had won the Nationals, she would have gotten $50,000 and would have come home on June 1. She got sent home early, because there were only to be 50 students in the finals at most. First there was a written test on Monday, and then, Tuesday and Wednesday they went up to the podium and spelled words. Ella spelled every word that came to her correctly but, with this spelling bee, it was all about points. If you missed the word, you got 0 points, if you spelled the word correctly, you got 3 points. If you got everything right on the written test, you got 30 points. So in the Nationals, they did it differently and had different rules. She was a great representative of Oakland School’s community.

Ella Limbaugh impacts the community by being a great role model. She doesn’t let anything get to her. She is a great person to look up to, and is always open to a good book. She says, “When I first learned I was going to the Nationals, I started studying as soon as I got the word list." Even the local newspaper, The Eagle took interest in this brilliant speller and wrote an article about Ella. It wrote about how she studies, and what she’s accomplished. Ella Limbaugh is a good sport about things, and she impacts our community so much by just doing the things she does every day, and being such a good role model to others. Ella Limbaugh works very hard in school and enjoys school very much. The best thing about Ella Limbaugh is that she does not get crazy anxious and is able to enjoy other people's successes.

In conclusion, Ella Limbaugh is a role model, and a very important part of our community. She is a great person to look up to, and a great speller. We are lucky to have such a great impact in our community. Usually when people think of people who impact communities, they think of grown-up, or super famous people. But, Ella Limbaugh is only 13 years old, and she is impacting our community in lots of different ways, which is awesome. It shows that children and young adults can just as well be people who make a difference.

Ms. Susan, the BEST Librarian ~ZL & IV

Ms. Susan is an amazing librarian at the Baldwin Public Library! Ms. Susan runs most of the book clubs at the Baldwin Library, both for the older kids and the little tiny 3 year olds! She also helps judge  the Battle of the Books, pictured below. “I like Ms. Susan,” said Macy, a constant library visitor, “She’s nice and she’s very helpful!” Ms. Susan helps the community by working with and helping kids, and helping at the library. Not many people know much about Ms. Susan, but that will change after you have read this!

Ms. Susan grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan, which is about 45 minutes from where she went to collage at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. Ms. Susan worked at a toy store before she became a librarian. She didn’t like working at the toy store because she thought all the kids there were crazy! Ms. Susan would have liked to be a singer, IF she had a ‘good voice’. She said, “So it’s coincidental that I do the Sing and Tell program for the little kids at the library.” Ms. Susan currently runs a lot of the book clubs at the library, and ‘loves reading and wants to share it with others’. She also said, “My favorite part about being a librarian is meeting new people through book clubs.”

Ms. Susan likes books (Obviously!) she doesn’t have a favorite book, but she does have two favorite genres. “I like biographies and travel books,” she said, “They’re very interesting.” Ms. Susan also hopes that 5 years in the future, she’s still be working at the library, but she also hopes to visit more interesting landmarks and other places in the next 5 years. She might even win 1 million dollars in the next five years.  If she did win 1 million dollars, then she would use it to plant trees and flowers and help the environment. Is glitter bad for the environment? Even though Ms. Susan really likes the environment she probably likes glitter at about the same level. She loves doing crafts with glitter at the library! She especially loves purple glitter because purple is her favorite color! Now you (hopefully) know more about Ms. Susan. Maybe you should go to the Baldwin Public library and talk to her some time!

Mindful Vibes ~ JM, KS & EK

Mr. Cognetto plays a big role in helping students at Beverly and Greenfield elementary. He is a counselor. ‘What is a counselor?’ you may ask. A counselor is a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or physiological problems. He is important because without him, some students might get frustrated. He teaches them mindfulness and relaxation strategies. “I wanted to start feeling calm and peaceful because at times the world around me feels overwhelming.” says Mr. C. He prefers people to remain calm and focus on their inner minds rather than stressing on all the little things in life.

Mr. C has been practicing mindfulness for awhile now. “I took a mindfulness class in college.” stated Mr. C. That was the start of his career. He has now been practicing mindfulness for five years. He never thought that he would be in this position today. Mr. C goes to Beverly and Greenfield to teach and help other students feel calm and focused.

At his job as an elementary school counselor, Mr. C teaches young students how to be be calm and aware of their surroundings. When looking back at his fifth grade year, he says, “I was silly, but quiet. I was full of energy, and tried my best to be a leader.” He says he was only focused on sports and nothing else. He is grateful to be in the position he is in today because there is more to life than sports.

We enjoy and appreciate having Mr. C help us learn the mindful way. We are very lucky to have Mr. C in our community because he helps us feel relaxed and at home in our school. Having the opportunity to learn mindfulness has made fifth grade amazing for us. Thank you Mr. C!

Mrs. Aubrey: My Mom ~AA

To me, my mom is super important. She is not only my mom, she is a teacher at Berkshire Middle School and is my softball coach. My mom inspires me to do whatever I put my mind to. I love her so very much. How does she handle it all?

I first wondered how it was like teaching. She said, “ My favorite thing about teaching is getting to know my students and helping them become more successful.” To me that sounds like the best answer that a teacher could have.

Then I wondered what her softball career was like and who inspired her to play. She said,“ I played 4 years of varsity high school softball, 6 years of summer travel softball, and 1 year at MSU. My mom was my coach and my sisters all played. Watching them play made me want to play too. I also loved being apart of a team and meeting new friends.

I think my mom is a great parent, so I wondered  who has helped her the most on being a really successful parent?  She said, “ My mom, my sisters, and my husband, are the people I rely on to help me make parenting decisions. I also pray a lot. I know that I don't know all the answers, but try my best and things usually it works out.”

My Mom the best mom ever. She handles, being a teacher, being my softball coach and being an amazing parent. She handles so much and is great at all of it. I can never explain how thankful, grateful, and happy I am to have her as my mother. She has a really big role in my life.

Interviewing Joseph Thurman ~ HC & ZO

The community is better with our workers; they help our community in many ways. They help us get around quicker, they make goods, and pretty much everything in our community is run by someone. Especially people who help make our food! Joseph Thurman is one of those people. He helps our community by making things quicker, and making our school lunch. He works hard to help our community.

Joseph said that as a kid he wanted to be a veterinarian because he always thought that animals were fascinating. He still feels the same way today because animals are still interesting to him. The reason he became a Beverly cafe worker is because his mother recommended a job anywhere in the school, and he saw that a spot for the job was open.  We are lucky that Joseph filled the position.

He believes he is helping the community by getting kids fed, and by putting a smile on their faces just by talking to them. By doing that he improves our day just a little, but a little adds up to a lot. He enjoys bringing that smile out of you, because it also improves his day as well.

What would Joseph do with a million dollars? He would invest some of the money, give some to his family, and start a non-profit organization. As you can see, Joseph Thurman is a great person to be behind the counter as a Beverly Cafe worker. He puts a smile on peoples faces, and helps keep kids fed. That is how he is helping the community.

Ms. Daphne ~ TB, FP & JS

Ms. Daphne, not a lot of us at Beverly Elementary know that name, but she’s doing so much for our school everyday as the school custodian. Ms. Daphne cleans up messes that are far more disgusting than any student could clean. During the winter she plows snow, and salts the sidewalks, she cleans the cafeteria, cleans our classrooms and so much more.  We should definitely recognize her for all she’s doing. She’s been a custodian here for 4 years and many people don’t even know her name. So this article is well deserved as Ms. Daphne is an important member of our community.

Ms. Daphne enjoys helping our school and community, and she likes to help the school with all of its tasks “I enjoy keeping the school clean.” When Ms. Daphne is done helping this community she would like to retire and go home to her grand kids. We all have our dreams for the future but Ms. Daphne's are simple.  Mrs.Daphne used to dream of being a housewife, but that was a while ago. Now she would like to retire. Also Ms. Daphne is so nice, that if a billion dollars was gifted to her, she would help people in need and build houses for the homeless. “I would like to help anyone I can,” said Ms.Daphne.

People may not think of Ms. Daphne as someone who stands out in our community, but if she wasn’t at our school it would be a disaster. Ms. Daphne salts the sidewalks, cleans the cafeteria, cleans all of our classrooms and she does so much more. Our school couldn't function without her.  Ms. Daphne is a very important part of our community and we should  recognize her for all the things she does. If you see Ms. Daphne around school, say thank you!

Beverly Principal ~ RS & DU

There are many great people in our community. There are lots of kind people in our community. There are very smart people in our community. Mrs. Vigneron is a great example of all those character traits. Mrs. Vigneron is a Principal at Beverly Elementary. Mrs. Vigneron is awesome and helps a lot in our community and at Beverly Elementary School.

Mrs. Vigneron said that she loves being the principal at Beverly Elementary. She said a reason she loves her job is because the kids are never the same. Mrs. Vigneron also said that she loves her job because it is never the same each day. Her favorite part about being principal at Beverly is that she likes being involved in fun activities. She also wants to make a difference. When asked if she thought that she was affecting this community she said, “ I hope so.” Mrs. Vigneron worked hard to make a difference even before she was a principal at Beverly.

Before Mrs. Vigneron was Principal at Beverly, she was a kindergarten teacher as well as a 3rd grade teacher. She was also a literacy coach for preschool through 8th grade. When asked what job she would want to have if she could not be a principal at Beverly, she said that she wanted to be a 2nd grade teacher, a grade she's never taught.

Mrs. Vigneron was asked what she would do with a million dollars, and her reply was,“ If I had a million dollars I would take my family on a vacation. And I would also share some of the money with my sons. The rest of the money I would save." We are so lucky to have Mrs. Vigneron in our community. She is a great principal and a great person.

Dr. Boyle ~NB

This article is about Dr. Boyle (AKA My Dad). He is a pediatrician, a doctor for kids, at Pediatric Care Corner. Dr. Boyle helps our community because he is a great doctor for kids.  Whenever anybody on our street gets sick, and can’t get a hold of a doctor, then they call Dr. Boyle. He graduated from Michigan State University, Lyman Briggs School where he received a Bachelor of Science in Physiology.

Dr. Boyle was very successful but he needed some help to get where he is right now. Dr. Boyle had some special people supporting him, ”My parents supported me, specifically my dad because he was also a doctor and I looked up to him." Once he got married and had kids it was hard to be a doctor but he said,”My wife supports me in a job where it takes me away from the family at times." When he was younger he always wanted to be a doctor and he said, ”all of the teachers who helped and challenged me throughout the years supported me too.”

Now Dr. Boyle works at his own office. He said,”I work at my office in West Bloomfield called Pediatric Care Corner.” Luckly he does not work alone. He works with four other doctors.  The pediatricians names are Dr. Bobal, Dr. Economy, Dr. Hornik, and Dr. Ober. But, there are not just four doctors he also works with ”an amazing staff."

Dr. Boyle doesn't plan to retire yet but he claims, “ I don’t see myself not practicing medicine, but I will definitely decrease the amount."  So, when he does retire then he will still be working with medicine, and he will help out the people he knows. At one point he is going to retire and when he does he wants to spend that time traveling and being with family. When he retires he can travel to family that lives far away.

Dr. Boyle is very helpful in our community. He is a doctor at Pediatric Care Corner, he has a wonderful family with a wife two daughters and a son. Dr. Boyle’s free time is spent racing sailboats, golfing, or traveling when he is not spending time with his family. He manly studies as a doctor in general pediatrics and diabetes. We are lucky to have a doctor like Dr. Boyle in our community.

How do prosecutors help the community? ~MD &NS

Prosecutor: A person, especially a public official, who institutes legal proceedings against someone.
One thing that most people ask themselves is “What do prosecutors do?”Most people don’t know the answer, but prosecutors themselves know exactly what they are doing. Helping the community in almost every way. They hold people accountable for their illegal actions.

Doug Salzenstein is a prosecutor in Detroit.  His specialty is knowing if someone needs to go to jail or if someone is just a victim. But he's not a detective, in fact he's after that part.  Doug Salzenstein helps the judge in all cases. But if the prosecutor figures out that someone committed a crime, he can tell the judge all of the evidence, or in other cases he can tell them someone was only a victim. Being a prosecutor can be risky, but it can save you from going to jail, or the judge will be more convinced that you were the victim.

How do they help? Or how do they even do their job?
Prosecutors help in situations where arguing with a judge may not be best because people don't know about all of the different laws. But prosecutors help support different topics since they have to memorize all the laws.

How do prosecutors know if someone needs to go to jail?
There are different steps before someone actually goes to jail.  First the police get called before the detective. The detective gets the information and finds the suspect. But imagine the suspect says it wasn't him.  That's where the prosecutor comes in. He reads the detectives information, then he needs to find out if he committed a crime or he's a victim. First the witnesses identify the the person who committed the crime, then the prosecutor asks the witness final questions to clarify any confusing testimony for the jury. This is called redirect examination.

Doug Salzenstein works very hard at his job, and we are lucky to have him in our community.  For fun, he was asked what he would do with one million dollars.  Doug Salzenstein replied, "I would take my family to Hawaii and I would also give some of my money to my parents and charity!"

A Dancer, Teacher, Gyrotonic Master Trainer and More ~ DB

A Dancer, Teacher, Gyrotonic Master Trainer…

And an aromatherapist! Veronique Breen is all of them! So, you might be wondering, “what does aromatherapy mean?” Or, “what's a Gyrotonic?” Veronique says. “Aromatherapy is using the oils of a plant to make things to keep you healthy, but this does not replace vitamins or medicine.” “As for Gyrotonic, the “gyro” means ring, spiral, or circle. And the “tonic” is to tone or invigorate.”

Growing up, Veronique was a dancer for 30 years! She danced in many ballets, and is a master hair stylist. Veronique says “I chose dancing because it was an easy way to express my feelings, without talking. And I was good at dancing so, it made sense."

Before Veronique moved to Michigan, she and her family lived in Boston. And before Boston, she lived in Amsterdam, Paris  and Brussels. “Brussels was where I was born. There's a lot of history there and the food is very good!” She had more to say about Boston and Michigan.  Veronique said that the roads in Boston are very backed up most of the time. She claims there is less nature then their is in Michigan. and more space in Michigan than Boston. “I like Michigan better because of all these reasons and more!” says Veronique.

Veronique Breen now owns a business called Motion Arts with her husband, Peter Breen at: 31333 Southfield Rd #140, Beverly Hills, MI 48025. And she also teaches at Valentinas school of ballet. “Before I wanted to be a dancer, I wanted to be a kids psychologist, meaning someone who helps kids with mental health. I wanted to do this job because when I was little, I was adopted, and I needed help with some problems, for example, not liking to talk. And I wanted to help other kids with similar problems that I had.”

So, now you know more about Veronique Breen. Did you ever wonder what she would do with more money? Maybe 50,000 dollars? Veronique says that if she had that much money, she would probably build a hydroponic farm! Meaning no chemicals, and healthy food for everyone! She would also donate money to save some endangered animals. “I would also pay off my car and house!” We are very lucky to have Veronique Breen in our community. If you want to know more about something, you can go to her website: http://www.vballetschool.com/breen/ and https://motionartspt.com

Officer Cooper ~KC & JB

Police Officers are very important to our community and they help the community too. Police Officers keep us safe and tell us to follow the laws and rules. Police Officers (depending on what type of police officer they are) sometimes risk their lives for us so we can be safe. There are over one million people who work as police officers. It is their job to make people obey the laws and fight for justice. We will be interviewing Kent Cooper because he is a police officer.

Kent Cooper is a police officer in the community. He said this about being a police officer, “It can be frustrating when people don’t work as a team, but it can also be fun when you are working with your friends.”  People may wonder why Cooper wanted to become a police officer.  He said, “If you want to be something it doesn’t matter on whether the job pays you more, or pays poorly. It’s all about doing stuff that you love.” He explained. Kent Cooper patrols the streets, he does paperwork for other workers’ payroll, and he goes to people’s houses if something’s wrong.

Police officers are a big help to our community.  Without them, dangerous and unfair things could happen. If Kent Cooper could, he would save the world.  There are many ways that police officers help our community.  Kent Cooper shared the example, “Well let’s say that there was a bank robbery. If we had no police men, then we wouldn’t have anyone to punish them for breaking the law. Some people do illegal things, so we have police officers to keep us protected and fair.” Cooper said.

Kent Cooper has seen a lot of millionaires, but we wondered what would Mr. Cooper do with one million dollars? “I would spend it on the car of my dreams, get a new house, and share some money with my family.” Kent Cooper told us. So this is why we think that police officers are worth millions!

Greg Moore ~GM

Greg Moore is one of the shareholders of Anchor Bay Steel along with his wife, Jen Moore. Anchor Bay Steel is a family owned steel company by the Moores and Rosens where they sell steel products to other companies. We will tell you what they do, when they do it, and where they do it. If you want to know more go to http://anchorbaysteel.com/. There you will learn about the owners, what anchor bay steel does, and what they aspire to do. Greg Moore is important to the community because Anchor Bay Steel sells steel to people who need it, and so people can fix their house, or build things that are important to the community.

Do you want to know what Anchor Bay Steel does?  Well, they sell steel to people that need it. “ We also help different small manufacturers and small businesses," says Moore.  When they are negotiating a deal they try to be nice to their customer. The customers will usually call them instead of Anchor Bay Steel calling the customers. Anchor Bay works hard to respond to their customers to tell them what is happening with their steel, or when it will be shipped there.

Do you want to know where they go for the business? The first place they go is the steel mill. They go there to check what's going on with it, and to see if everything is on track. In the steel mill they watch steel being melted and shaped into sheets.  Mr. Moore is usually the one who goes out of state to see the customer, or to check how things are going with their shipping. Going out of state is not something they do very often, but they will if needed. They go to the shipping place to see if they are doing everything right and if the shipment will get there on time.

Do you want to know when they do all of this stuff? Anchor Bay does all of this stuff during the working day, like when their kids are at school. Sometimes they go places over the weekend but when they do that it is mostly Greg who goes out of state and stays for a couple days. They will go to their office during the day. But sometimes Greg stays late and keeps working if he has work due soon that he needs to finish.

Greg Moore impacts the community by “creating jobs and a place to work that people can enjoy being at, that's fun." Greg also says, "Health care is taken care of and there is a good working environment.”  So as you can see, we should all be grateful that Greg Moore gives a helping hand in our community, and he will always be there for our community members.

Mr. Noyes ~ ET & MW, LW & BG

You like running around and having fun?  Well, Mr.Noyes is all about that, he is a Physical Education teacher at Beverly Elementary school. Some of the sports we play in his classroom are hockey, basketball, football and more. Running around is one of his favorite activities. He has so much fun teaching us about the activity we are progressing, during the right season for that sport. Like baseball for spring and football for fall.

Mr. Noyes has been a P.E. teacher for 15 years! Mr. Noyes said he was inspired to be a P.E. teacher because as a kid he was really athletic and loved sports. He even said as a hobby he lifts weights and kettle bells. He is the best P.E. teacher ever!

As a kid, Mr. Noyes loved sports. He says he was pretty small as a kid though. But then he grew bigger and was able to dunk on a ten foot basketball rim! He always loved being outside and was really athletic growing up. Even now he loves being outside and loves sports.

Before Mr.Noyes came to Beverly he taught at St. Regis Catholic School in Bloomfield Hills, he also taught in Flint, and Pontiac. Before that he was a waiter for a few years. Mr. Noyes played the guitar in a band and loves music. Mr. Noyes went to Western Michigan University where he got his Physical education degree and got his health education degree from Wayne State University. He competes in kettle bell lifting competitions and loves traveling. Mr. Noyes said, “ If I had a million dollars I would spend it on traveling.”

Mr. Noyes helps our community by helping kids get stronger and get better at sports. He has also coached many sports teams and loves to play sports too.  He loves sports and helping kids to be the best they can be. He is very good at sports himself.

As you know now Mr. Noyes is a big inspiration to people in the community as well as many kids at Beverly Elementary.  Everyone is lucky to have him in our community because he inspires kids and doesn't care if you can’t bat in baseball or throw, he will let you play no matter how big or how small.  He finds a special athletic talent for every kid and it may take awhile but it’s in you somewhere.  We are thankful that Mr. Noyes is our P.E. teacher at Beverly.

Mr. Iatrou ~ ER, ABR & AW

Mr. Iatrou is a fourth grade teacher at Beverly Elementary School. Some think he is the best fourth grade teacher. He teaches social studies and math. We chose him because he is nice and he inspires kids.

Mr. Iatrou had a job in the past as an interior designer so he designed houses. As a teacher, he likes to learn about all of his students and their personalities. He works hard to make teaching fun. He plans to work until his kids get out of college.

Mr. Iatrou helps the community by teaching kids. He is really good at it, too. He is super funny and has the most fun activities in the class. He is very smart and fun to have as a teacher. If he had a million dollars he said he would spend it by,“paying off my kid's colleges and retire happy."  Thank you for being a great teacher Mr. Iatrou!

Dr. Hitchcock ~EB, JR & KB

Have you been wondering about Dr. Hitchcock's new job? Have you been wondering about what she does to help the community? Have you been wondering a lot about Dr. Hitchcock? If so, then we highly recommend that you keep reading.

You may be wondering what Dr. Hitchcock does. Well, if yes, then this is the paragraph for you. Dr. Hitchcock is now the director of Character Education and Diversity & Equity or CEDE. One of the most common questions people may have for her is, “What is Equity?” Well, she gave us a great example for that. Imagine there is a baby, a middle school-er, and an adult. They are all at a table sharing pizza. Everyone needs a specific amount to feel full and nourished. If they all get the same amount (equal amounts), the baby would get too much, and the adult could get too little to eat. This is an example of equity.  We all need different amounts of schooling for us to succeed in school.

Dr. Hitchcock has faced many challenges growing up. She had a great fear of speaking in front of crowds. However, because she overcame her fears, it made her part of who she is today. Now Dr. Hitchcock has to speak in front of large groups of people for her job.

When Jamii Hitchcock was growing up, she was encouraged by her mother and her fifth grade teacher. They told her to reach for her goals and never give up. Jamii’s mother has supported her through her journey in life. Her mother believes in working hard and she even takes some classes because she wants to fully understand things. Well that explains why Dr. Hitchcock is so smart!

Dr. Hitchcock hopes to change our community in different ways. Her focus is to challenge people’s thinking, show them what they can do when we all come together. She said, “When we all come to the table, with a different background, it allows us to be creative.”

Dr. Hitchcock does many things, helping 14 different schools. She organizes for teachers, helps choir committees, and is apart of all sorts of education. She helps our community in many different ways. Dr. Hitchcock is committed to making great change in our community.

Todd England ~ DE

Todd England has been a hard worker for his whole life. He is the youngest of 4 children. England is the senior director of his team at Comcast business. His team put all of the WiFi and fiber into Little Caesars Arena. So if his team didn't do it the huge jumbo-tron would not work. The deal was huge for Comcast business. It was an 11 million dollar deal that put his team on top.

England played hockey when he was little but for his family it was hard to have him play hockey. When he was nine his dad was in and out of the hospital. His dad had a failing kidney and that meant that they had little money to spend for England to play hockey. A lot of teams wanted England to play on their teams, but it just cost to much. So the team would let him play on the team for free. After a little while England's oldest sister gave her dad a kidney. By this time they had very little money. So they did not get nice fancy things. The one thing that they would get that is very nice where shoes. The reason they got nice shoes was because England's mom has foot problems.

When Todd England got older he went to college at Lake Superior State University. The year that he went the hockey team won the national championship, but he was the third goalie. When he was done with college he had some small jobs. Then he met Deanna MCalhany. Then in 2004 they got married. 2 years later they had their first baby named Robert Turner England. Two years after that they had the best kid, Drake Lyndon England on July 24th 2008.

Then England began working at Comcast business. October 7th 2017 the worst day in England's life,  the day that his dad died. A little later the best day in Drake’s life, November 24th 2017 the day they got Duke London England, their cute puppy. One day when everyone in the family was in Florida the Red Wings signed the deal. October 6th 2018 was the first game at Little Caesars Arena. England took his two boys to watch the Red Wings win against the Minnesota Wild 5-1. It was there he saw his hard work come to life on the jumbo-tron.

Michael Sikorsky ~ CS, NM & CN

Michael Sikorsky was born in Rochester to his dad Richard Sikorsky and his mom Teddie Sikorsky. He was born October 19, 1970. When he was 4 his little brother Jan Sikorsky was born. He really liked his brother and hated to fight. When his youngest brother was born he was even more excited that he could have lots more fun with his two brothers. When Michael was in 4th grade he got his first job mowing lawns. His first real job was as a mail carrier when he was in 6th grade. He always wanted to grow up and be a very independent person so he started to work at a young age.

Dr. Michael Sikorsky is now an anesthesiologist, a dad of four, and a husband. He is married to Nena Sikorsky. He enjoys hockey, golf, and skiing. He had 21 years of practice before becoming a doctor. He went to college at MSU to study medicine and went to U of M to study being a doctor.  Sikorsky's children's names are Elliot , Charli, Kelci, and Harrison. He also has a dog named Lucy. Michael works at Beaumont hospital.

Michael doesn't think he does much for the community, while he helps out,  he thinks that he could do more. Michael wanted to be a doctor because it is a field where you are always challenged and you are always learning.  He really likes helping people with their problems, but he thinks that he should do more than what he does for the community. In Michael’s free time when he has it (which is rarely) you will see him playing golf or hockey or he will be on his sports simulator.  Michael also really enjoys when he goes skiing in Colorado or Utah with his family. If Michael had any other job it would be a ski school instructor because he loves to ski and he would love to live in Colorado.

Our Community Physical Therapist ~ AG

The person that I selected for our fifth grade blog article is someone important to me. Her name is Megan Wolf and she is my physical therapist. She is a big part of my recovery from my foot injury. Miss Megan works at Beaumont Rehabilitation Center in the orthopedic department.

She went to school for 7 ½ years to get her doctorate in physical therapy at Wayne State University. She also went back to school for two years to do a residency in orthopedic manual therapy. She has now worked at Beaumont for 4 years.

It is always important to know the story on why people want to pursue their career. Miss Megan wanted to be a physical therapist because she loves working with people. "I love helping people from being injured to being healthy again. So that's why I looked into being a physical therapist.”

Miss Megan's favorite part about her job is "helping people figure out what exercises work for them to get them back to where they were functioning the way they were before their injury."  I think Miss Megan gave some amazing responses about her job and about how she helps people.

Miss Megan not only helps people every day she wants to know what they want to do and to get them into a mindset that they will be able to do this with their help and her help. “ So for each person we talk about what they need to do. So in your case you wanted to get back to swimming and back to running and back to doing everything appropriate for your age. If it was someone who was maybe 85 it might be I want to sit for thirty minutes without my back hurting. So we first have to figure out what goals are for that patient and then my job is to create a program to get from were they are now to where they want to be."  Miss Megan has such wonderful responses in our interview.

When asked where she likes to be outside of work, her response was, “ I think probably at the grocery store the most because I love cooking. But I like to be outside.  I like to go running.  I like to go kayaking, and this time of year is my favorite time to go. So i'm really out and about a lot of time”. I would love to do all of the fun stuff Miss Megan does outside of work. She sounds super fun and outdoorsy. Not only does she help people, but she likes to have fun too.

Miss Megan's idol was not therapy related, "my parents are my biggest fans because they both are very motivated and determined to accomplish their goals.  They have showed me that everything doesn't always happen the way you want them to, so always keep trying”. I highly agree with everything that Miss Megan said and all of her answers are amazing and inspiring to me and hopefully they are to you.

I feel super lucky to have a amazing physical therapist like Miss Megan. She is amazing at her job. She is super nice and kind and fun to be around. I am super grateful that she is my physical therapist and apart of our community.

Huron Capital ~AF, AG & KM

As a kid, Demkowicz wanted to be a baseball player for the White Socks in Chicago. When he was asked what job he would have other than running Huron Capital, he said he wanted to be a rock musician. "I love to play the guitar and it would be very fun to perform in front of people.” Coming from a professional businessman, that sounds like a lot of fun!   In his free time, Mr. Demkowicz likes to travel to places like Mexico, Germany, and Italy to name a few of his favorite trips.

Mr. Brian Demkowicz's company is called, Huron Capital. He started this company because he has a degree in accounting and he wanted to help people. Demkowicz has been at Huron Capital for thirty years. He also plans to keep working at Huron for hopefully a long time. Demkowicz helps our community by investing in small companies to help them become successful.

Mr. Demkowicz is an important member of our community because he supports working people so they have money to take care of their families. He tries to give companies a real chance to rise to the top.  Huron Capital has what is called “rich heritage," and that heritage comes from hard work! Mr. Demkowicz's company helps other smaller companies by working hard to make them stronger. Huron Capital believes that, “business owners, executives, and deal referral sources choose our firm because we deliver on what we say we are going to do.” More information on Mr. Brian Demkowicz can be found on his website at www.huroncapital.com.

Knock Your Socks Off Teachers at Beverly ~ AA & LK

Teachers in Michigan help a lot of people. The teachers in Michigan are willing to help out any kid that needs help. You might think that some teachers are unkind, but really they just want you to have a good education and have skills for when you are older and taking care of yourself and your family.

Elementary education has really great teachers. They are teachers who always help little kids and are taking their time helping kids.  This is the same in middle schools and high schools. Elementary school goes from kindergarten to fifth grade, but some schools go to sixth grade. So let's start the journey of learning about teachers!

There are so many great teachers at Beverly such as Mrs. Dickson.  Mrs. Dickson teaches all subjects in third grade except for science.  She wanted to teach when she was babysitting.  When asked, "Who inspired you?" Mrs. Dickson said, "My third grade teacher."  To change the community, Mrs. Dickson said, "I would get better recycling systems in our community."

Mrs. Pardington is another great teacher at Beverly School.  She teaches all of the science, part of math, and part of ELA in fifth grade.  Mrs. Pardington has a family of teachers and was also inspired by her third grade teacher, like Mrs. Dickson.  To change the community, Mrs. Pardington said, "Get kids off the technology and outside more."

There are even more great teachers. One of them is Mr Noyes at Beverly Elementary. He is a P.E teacher. His favorite part of teaching is seeing kids succeed. Mr Noyes had a lot of great teachers when he was in school, so all of those teachers that he had inspired him to become a teacher. Some of those teachers that he had might have been substitutes that he liked as well.

Substitute teachers are exactly like teachers, they want to help kids. I guess subs aren’t exactly like teachers but they are close. Subs come in to teach a class if the teacher of that class can not teach for some reason. Subs might have influenced a lot of teachers back then. Be thankful for your subs because they do a lot for the community.

Mrs. Christ and Mrs. Airgood are both teachers at Beverly Elementary. Mrs.Airgood teaches first grade and Mrs. Christ teaches second grade. They both wouldn’t want to change anything about the community. They both think that the Birmingham community is great the way that it is. Both Mrs. Airgood and Mrs. Christ were inspired by their third grade teachers. They said that they both wanted to be exactly like their third grade teacher. Because of their third grade teachers and all of the rest of their teachers, they became the amazing teachers they are today.

Now you know about the teachers in Birmingham. They are amazing teachers that love to help and encourage students to do their best. Because of your teachers you will have a good education. Don’t forget to treat your teachers awesomely.  They are always here for you. THANK YOU TEACHERS FOR ALL YOU DO!

Staying in Shape ~JN & HC

Working out is important because you need be healthy. When you get older you get weaker and more fragile. So if you work out you will live longer. Working out means being able to push your body to its physical limits. Exercising is very important. "I think that working out is great for your health and your quality of life," says Mrs. Newby.

There are many places where you can exercise in the community like; LA fitness, Planet Fitness,YMCA, Get Some Fitness, Powerhouse Gym, Jabs gym, BHC, Fit Body Boot Camp, Everybody RPM Fitness, High Caliber Strength, and Fitness Gym.

It is important to stay safe while you are exercising because you don't want to drop 200 pounds on your foot, or turn the treadmill to max speed and fall and hurt yourself. Lifting weights can hurt you as well. You could strain a muscle and even tear a muscle. Trainers at Planet Fitness Gym say, "The best items to use to work out are a treadmill, doing jumping jacks, push ups, and lifting weights."

Resist That Cookie! ~ HN & DF

Hey you! Yes, you! Have you ever tried so hard to resist temptation? Specifically having to do with food? Well here are some reasons why you definitely should resist those terrible temptations.

We interviewed our Physical Education teacher and asked a few questions. He said, “You have to want to eat healthy. It’s easier than people think.” He also gave us some good snack suggestions. He suggested homemade trail mix, including some assorted nuts and dried berries. He also suggested homemade turkey roll-ups. He said that fruits and veggies are important, as well as protein.

Our P.E. teacher also advised, “Kids should eat healthy snacks because healthier snacks give kids more healthy energy than fattier snacks.” We asked him, “What would be the best time of day to eat a healthy snack?” He responded, “All day would be best. Especially before breakfast, or sometime early in the day."  Relating to the previous question, we asked, “When should kids should eat a healthy snack, after exercising, or before?” He responded, “Both. Before would be good to fuel them through the exercise session, and after would be good to give the energy back that they lost while exercising.”

We also asked our P.E teacher, “What should be in a healthy snack recipe?“ He said, “There should be something from each of the food groups. A lot of fruits and veggies should be included. Another thing that should be included is protein.” Protein is in a lot of stuff like meat and nuts, and berries, and so much more. Protein is very good for your body, it ‘sticks to your ribs’ more than other types of food, meaning that you will be full for longer, and won’t get hungry sooner.

Our P.E teacher said that people must make health a priority. The more healthy you eat, the more healthy you will crave. Don’t think healthy food is gross-tasting food, make healthy snacks that you will enjoy, but that are still beneficial for your health. It isn’t hard to eat healthy, but it can really enhance your life. In addition to eating healthy, it would be excellent to do at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. You will be surprised at how much healthier you have become.

Stay healthy and safe!

Phone Use While Driving ~ NS & DT

General Cell Phone Statistics: The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. Nearly 390,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving. One out of every four car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving. You might need your phone while driving, like for directions to go somewhere, but you should put in the address before you start driving.

Police pull over people every day for people using their phone. People who are texting and driving are 6 times more likely to cause accidents than being under the influence. Drivers are 23 times more likely to get in a crash while texting and driving. About 660,000 people a day use their phone while driving. Texting while driving causes a 400% increase in time spent with your eyes off the road.
It’s dangerous to text and drive around Beverly School because there are LOT of children running around, and people need to be careful. There are a lot of people in the drop off that use their phones and don't look up as much. Also a lot of little kids don’t know when it is the right time to cross the road, and there could be people that don't see a student walk out in front of them.

Why is it dangerous?  Because if you're on a call with one hand holding a phone and another had on the wheel, you might not be able to make a turn that you need two hands for. This is also dangerous because if you have two hands on your phone and you are looking down at your phone and texting then you aren't paying attention to the road.  You may also not see somebody coming in a blind spot that you can't see because of phone use.

Lions Situation According to 5th Grade ~ LW, BG & DU

The Detroit Lions have been a decently okay team in years past. In the 2018 season the Detroit Lions went 6-10.  If you don’t know what that is, it’s 6 wins and 10 losses, finishing 8th in the NFL. This is how the Detroit's Lions can prevent this from happening.

This year the lions have picked up a few good new recruits such as, Danny Amendola Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphins, Jesse James tight end, Pittsburgh Steelers, Trey Flowers Defencive end, New England Patriots, Justin Coleman cornerback, Seattle Seahawks, and Andrew Adams safety, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Also a few other Offensive Lineman.

Our Physical Education teacher has some different opinions about the lions.  He said in the 2018 season they under performed.  It was very disappointing going 6-10 after hiring a new coach. He hopes they can improving going into the 2019 season, "I’m not holding my breath" and "They are very hard to watch" are some of his comments about the Lions. He thinks they will have a nice defense and the offence needs to improve. He also hopes the running game can improve. He hopes that Amendola will be a good fit if he stays healthy.

We enjoyed interviewing our gym teacher at Beverly Elementary, Joshua Noyes. We know he loves teaching and being a physical education teacher. He too, is tired of them losing like we are and the first thing he said when we handed the questions to him was “Oh, the Lions”.

Playground Equipment ~ JB, DB & KC

New playground equipment has been a big debate since 2018. Most people want new playground equipment, and a few people would rather keep it the same. We are some of the people who would like new playground equipment.

It seems that the little kids fortunately got new playground equipment in the last few years, but the big kids’ playground still has no new equipment. Barely anyone plays on things like the orange monkey bars, the green monkey bars, or the long wide asphalt, especially in the winter. While working on this presentation we got a gaga pit. We asked Mrs. Hausman if we were the ones who gave them the idea to get a gaga pit. “No we already had that planned but you three influenced us to get one.” Mrs. Hausman announced.

We have interviewed our 5th grade class on what new playground equipment they would like. The gaga pit took first place with 24 votes! Other people want things like gymnastics equipment, trampolines, slides, better basketball hoops and nets, as well as new soccer net. “Our playground equipment is boring.” Maddy said, one of the 5th graders we interviewed.

We asked our principal, Mrs. Vigneron, if she believes that we need new playground equipment on the big playground, and she said, “Yes, I do.” Mrs. Vigneron explained that she wants equipment that the kids at Beverly would like. For example, stuff to climb on or a Gaga Pit. Lastly, when asked if the playground is safe, Mrs. Vigneron said, “Yes our playground is safe because every year our playground is checked to make sure it is safe.”

Cleaning up the Community ~ LS, NC, NZ & KJ

Outside in a Grand Rapids, Michigan coffee shop a bunch of people got together to clean up litter. According to Michigan there was more than 1 million pounds of trash, think how much trash that is. Thanks to all those people who helped our community stay clean and stay healthy. Miss Daphne, the Beverly School custodian said,  "Always keep your community clean."

Beverly is a clean place but not everybody is perfect. Sometimes we can litter BUT that’s ok. If everybody can clean up after themselves, then we will have the cleanest community ever. Like our custodian said above, more people should clean up like her. But it’s not just about throwing everything in the trash. It’s about also recycling if we recycle then we’ll have a better world and community for people and animals to live in. When we throw trash away it goes to a landfill and they burn it.  This smells really bad. If we litter then the trash one day may float or roll all the way to the ocean. Animals are curious and they will die or get sick of they eat a piece of trash because it’s not good for their health. We also drink water so that would just be bad. We should stop littering and make this a better world and community.

If everyone does their part we can build a community without liter, block by block. These blocks are our actions, if everyone picks up trash or throws away their trash it makes it better for the community. So throwing away trash, recycling, and throwing litter away, will be normal in our everyday lives. Miss Daphne said, it is easy to be a cleaner so how about we all pitch in and help! Then, we will build the community where no one litters, they toss their trash, and other things but, if we litter freely than everyone will accept it. We will live in a world where everyone just litters. Just think to yourself when you litter, “what if everyone did that?”

We should recycle more. About 15 percent of all trash is recycled. But we can get the percentage up. Right now Michigan does have a trash problem,  but we can fix that.  The problem is also that people do not recycle much in all of America. Out of 260 million tons of plastic 10 percent goes to the ocean which is incredible. This shows that people do need to recycle more.
